5 Unflushable Items that Can Cause You to Need Toilet Repair

a flush toilet on wood floorYou may think of your toilet as a throne, where you spend many hours a day contemplating life or playing a round of Words With Friends and scrolling through Facebook, among other things. But your toilet, as sacred as it might be, is not indestructible. In fact, there are many things you should by all means avoid flushing down the toilet.

Floss

Floss seems innocent enough, right? Well, you couldn’t be further from the truth. Floss is small, but it can wreak a lot of havoc on your toilet and plumbing system. Floss can get caught in your pipes and then accumulate gunk and debris until you have a serious clog on your hands, one that can cause your toilet to back up and need to be repaired. Floss is better thrown away in the trash.

Kitty Litter

We use toilets, so why can’t our cats? And since dumping kitty litter down the john is easier than potty training our feline friends….well, you get the point. But just how harmful is dumping kitty litter down the toilet? Quite harmful, actually. Kitty litter doesn’t flush well, causing it to clog your drains. It also lumps together when wet, so you’d most likely have trouble getting it down in the first place, resulting in a huge mess. It’s best to dispose of it in the garbage.

Feminine Products

While it may seem counterintuitive to dispose of them any other way, they can actually clog your toilet. Sometimes, the clogs are so severe, they cause your pipes to burst, leak, or to overflow via your toilet. These are also best in the trash.

Wipes

Again, another counterintuitive, don’t flush it down the toilet item; wipes should never be flushed down the toilet. While toilet paper will break apart when it is flushed, wipes, even many of the ones that claim to be flushable,  will not, resulting in clogs and overflowing toilets that often require toilet repair. The next time you use a wipe, be smart about how you dispose of it.

Cotton Balls and Q-Tips

Other items that don’t break apart properly when flushed, cotton balls and q-tips should never be flushed down a toilet. Unless you want to have toilet repair done on your toilet, throw these in the trash.
